Göteborg book fair: Estonia in Focus

Friday, 01 October 2010

The Göteborg Book Fair is a garden, says Kätlin Kaldmaa. The directors of the fair have succeeded in creating a new world every year, a microscopic world compared to the planet in all her plentitude And every year there are new trees of thought, experience and writing, becoming rooted in thought, experience and writing of guests.

Kätlin Kaldmaa, editor at the Estonian daily Eesti Päevaleht, what kind of expectations do you have as to this years book fair in Göteborg?

The Göteborg Book Fair is a garden. The directors of the fair have succeeded in creating a new world every year, a microscopic world compared to the planet in all her plentitude, and every year there are new trees of thought, experience and writing, becoming rooted in thought, experience and writing of guests. And those trees will bear new, unprecedented fruits in most unexpected places.

You have visited the book fair earlier – your impressions ?

A hundred thousand people I'd like to meet at the same time at the same place.

Does it matter that Estonia and Estonian literature will be in focus this year?

Of course it matters. We are small, we are not very significant when it comes to worldly affairs, but we are unique, and infallibly present. We have something to offer no-one else has. I'm anxious to find out what it is.
