Design from the Åland Islands in Tallinn

Friday, 01 October 2010

This is definitely top design from the Åland Islands, the best our sovereign islands are able to show, says Lena Nyman, project coordinator of the design exhibition to be opened in Tallinn in October. Modern design from the Åland Islands, form.ax, will be exhibited in the Hungarian institute in Tallinn from October 1 to October 13, 2007.

Project coordinator Lena Nyman, why do designers from Åland Islands want to exhibit their work in Tallinn?

The exhibition is actually on a major tour in the Nordic countries. Design from Åland has not been exhibited to this extent in Estonia earlier, so it is due time and the exhibition in Tallinn fits well into the context.

The exhibition has been professionally composed by Timo Sairi.

Stefan Lindfors, a well-known Finnish designer, has chosen the objects. Lindfors will be present when the exhibition opens on October 1st, at 4 p.m.

Most of the designers work with handicraft on a daily basis and are educated in their respective art form.

Does design from Aland differ from design in the Nordic countries in general or are the same trends present, as well?

There are trends present that you easily can track back to areas close by, of course. Design from Aland, however, is largely based upon materials, colours and forms to be found in the surrounding nature. Most objects are functional, an important fact as well. But I have to point out that design from Aland does not necessarily mean that the artist is born on the Aland Islands, though.

The aim of form.ax is to present modern design from the Aland Islands. The objects on exhibit represent a large variety of arts, from textile and ceramics to glass and graphics.

The exhibition will be open until October 13 and will then move on from Estonia to Norway and the Faroe Islands.

The Hungarian Institute is situated on Toompea, at 2, Piiskopi.

Opening hours: Mon- Thursday 10-17, Friday 10-15.
