Karen Ellemann has extensive political expertise in several key areas. She has been a member of the Danish parliament from 2007 to 2022, and in addition the minister for fisheries, minister for gender equality, and minister for Nordic co-operation, as well as minister for social affairs, minister of the interior, and minister for the environment. Ellemann is also the former chair of the Nordic Association in Denmark.
While Ellemann is already very familiar with the Nordic Region, as she has previously been Minister for Nordic Co-operation for Denmark and a member of the Nordic Council, she also feels a strong personal connection to the Baltic countries. Ellemann´s father, Uffe Ellemann-Jensen was a great friend to Estonia, a dear long-time friend of President Lennart Meri, and a fierce voice for the regaining of Estonia´s independence. Ellemann-Jensen had a genuine interest and deep knowledge of the history of the three Baltic states, and this interest has carried on to his daughter, Karen, who says: “Nordic-Baltic co-operation is more important than ever. In my view, stronger co-operation is the answer to the challenges we face. We can solve so much if we work together.”
Co-operation is a word Ellemann uses frequently. She often emphasises the importance of teamwork for achieving results. She values the expertise of the Nordic and Baltic Institutions and their excellent co-operation efforts towards achieving the Nordic prime ministers’ vision for the Nordic Region to be the most sustainable and integrated region in the world by 2030.
In addition to political meetings the Secretary General will also meet with the staff of the Nordic Council of Ministers´ Estonian office. With a new Nordic Council Cooperation Programme underway for 2025-2027 discussions will focus on present work and future opportunities for the Office.
